Asymmetric Reality

  • Current Endeavors: The concept of Asymmetric Reality is being implemented in various domains such as space, time, and language.

    • In terms of space and time: [CGUI Lab Research 202310~], [CGUI Lab Research (FMRG)], etc.
    • Regarding language: [Namura Lab AIMC Research]
    • The goal is to discover useful use cases and interesting phenomena.
    • The aim is to create something that can be placed in various positions between Subjective Reality and Objective Reality.

  • Capabilities: Developing a theory of design.

    • The phrase “design theory” was introduced by Professor Inami during [20240109 Inami Lab LT].

    • What is design theory?

      • For example, [Melting Design]
        • As information technology advances, hardware, software, and the internet are increasingly merging, giving rise to a new world. In this world, a new approach to design thinking and logic is necessary.

        • This book, the first by the promising young researcher Keita Watanabe in the field of interface/interaction design research, unravels the design thinking methodology centered around the most crucial keyword for future creation, “sense of self-attribution.”

    • Vaguely envisioned aspects include:

      • Revealing the existence of “positive discrepancies” and “negative discrepancies” in each domain.
      • Generalizing the “positive discrepancies” in various domains and explaining the design of these at a meta-level.
        • Discussions like “Let’s think about whether we want to share explicitly/implicitly shared events and variables fundamentally” seem feasible.
          • [Framework]
          • Applying this design theory to online lectures might lead to [kineto], while applying it to teleoperation might result in [FMRG].
            • Interesting (blu3mo)(blu3mo)
      • This process may involve discovering various specific use cases, then generalizing and systematizing them.
  • Capabilities: Solving technical obstacles/problems.

    • Approach:
      • It is beneficial to have discrepancies.
      • To move from the current “state without discrepancies” to a “better state with discrepancies,” certain obstacles need to be addressed.
      • These obstacles can be overcome using specific technologies.
    • For instance:
      • Effective communication in a state with discrepancies may require redirection, viewpoint overlay, or switching.
      • Discovering common techniques across domains (language, space-time, etc.) would be intriguing.
    • This area seems heavily influenced by one’s technical expertise.
      • For example, I may not be able to conduct research like [Placement Retargeting of Virtual Avatars to Dissimilar Indoor Environments] using deep learning at present.
        • However, it would be a waste to dismiss that possibility.
      • Should I focus on my undergraduate studies? (blu3mo)
      • Or engage in research with others.
  • The former two, creating a design theory and addressing technical obstacles/problems, can be seen as design and engineering, respectively.

    • This linkage may seem obvious when written down, but I find it an interesting connection (blu3mo).
  • Capabilities: Engaging with philosophy and related topics.

    • Since the meaningful way of engaging with philosophy is still unclear, I simply labeled it as “various things” (blu3mo).
    • While explaining the connections between concepts and other areas seems possible, a vision for deriving significant insights from them is not yet clear.
      • I don’t want to use philosophy merely for authority or scholarly moves.
    • [Smooth Society and Its Enemies] and [Ethics of Leisure and Boredom] are examples of humanities-based concepts being applied in practical discussions, which I would like to emulate.- Probably due to a lack of knowledge/understanding, I want to talk to people and study more.
  • What I can do: Create something that people are willing to pay for and run a business.

  • This is the latest version of discussions that took place in the past regarding What to do with ParallelTalk-related research, and Research on temporal relationships.

    • After a few years, the focus shifted towards Asymmetric Reality and more things became visible, so it’s time to reconsider.

  • When replacing the part about ”Asymmetric Reality” with something else, I want to explore what other people are doing.
    • I wonder if most academic papers are doing this?
      • Presenting design theories based on abstract themes or solving specific problems.
    • Or maybe the themes of other labs.
