I’d like to see more creative designers and technologists working on ambitious ideas like this. It’s not easy for several reasons, as I have discussed elsewhere. But I want to help, even if it’s just a little bit. The question is, how can anyone learn to do this kind of work?
In many other fields, the answer is graduate school. However, I don’t think the relevant academic field (human-computer interaction) does this type of work very well. It is essential to apprentice with industry designers to develop many of the practical skills needed. Unfortunately, industry designers rarely have the opportunity to create radical new concepts, and their practices generally lack the specialized depth required for transformative insights.

- This seems to resonate with my thoughts as an undergrad who is considering this for the future.
Concerns:
- Wait, isn’t it impossible visa-wise?
- Maybe it’s possible with OPT…?
- Also, it seems like they require full-time work. If I were to do this, I might have to drop some classes.
- Plus, it seems highly unlikely to get selected.
- Since they are looking for at least one person, it’s going to be tough, especially in the design field.
- So, if they repeat this opportunity next year, maybe I can consider it…?
