- In Tokyo, there are four permanent theaters for Rakugo: Shinjuku Suehiro-Tei, Ikebukuro Engei-jo, Ueno Suzumoto-Engei-jo, and Asakusa Engei Hall. In terms of the building’s atmosphere, I recommend Suehiro-Tei.
- There are also frequent Rakugo performances at the National Engei Hall, which will be rebuilt and closed this autumn, so it’s a good idea to go there before it’s too late.
- The Tokyo version of the Rakugo information magazine, “Tokyo Kawara-ban,” which is sold at Junkudo and other places, covers about 80% of the Rakugo performances in Tokyo, so it’s interesting to look at it and explore local theaters, etc.
- The difference between “Yose” and “Rakugo-kai” is that “Yose” is a team-play-oriented show in a permanent theater where 10-20 comedians perform for about 15 minutes each, with the master of ceremonies neatly closing the show, while “Rakugo-kai” is a planned event where 3-6 comedians perform their individual skills for a relatively longer time, held in various places such as halls, restaurants, and temples.
