Life Consideration Series

The title might be too casual, but it will be changed later.

Materials:

Based on these, I feel like my decision-making strategy has become clearer:

  • Therefore, I will try to 1) articulate it and 2) use it to find answers to the issues I am currently considering.

Assumptions:

*Note 1: This explanation is current as of September 2024. Motivations may change without notice. Please be aware of this in advance. *Note 2: We will not be involved in any related projects due to future changes in motivation and will not be liable for any damages.

When I have free time, I tend to enjoy the following activities:

  • ① Thinking of and implementing mystery systems that do not exist in this world
  • ② Experimenting with the phenomena that arise from these systems
  • ③ Abstracting the systems created and the phenomena that occur

This “cycle” already exists in a small-scale form:

  • Creating something that can be implemented with my current technical skills, having myself and people around me use it, and then reflecting on what happens as a result.

I want to make each part of this “cycle” ①②③ more significant and engaging:

  • Writing down what changes in myself or the external environment would make each part “more engaging” in my mind
    • (It’s difficult to cover everything, but as widely as possible)
    • ① Thinking of and implementing mystery systems that do not exist in this world

    • ② Experimenting with the phenomena that arise from these systems

    • Learning robotics expands the possibilities of what I can create, making ① more interesting
    • When the software I create spreads on social media, the feedback increases, making ② more interesting
    • Studying phenomenology broadens the understanding of phenomena, making ③ more interesting
  • Listing the resources I currently have in mind
    • Development skills

    • Experimentation skills

    • Thinking skills (?)

    • Communities I belong to

    • Discussion partners, collaborators, co-founders, etc.

      • (Viewing through a factorio-like mental model)
    • Social media followers

By connecting the outcomes of ①②③ to society, acquiring resources, and transforming them, I can further expand ①②③:

  • Examples of connection points:
    • Academia
      • Connection approach: Submitting ①②③ to conferences in the context of HCI research
      • Resources obtained:
        • Social capital in academia
        • → Positions like internships in research labs → ①②③
        • → Research funding from governments or companies → ①②
    • Market
      • Connection approach: Creating a business by connecting what was created in ①②③ to customer needs
      • Returns:
        • Profit
        • Customer feedback → ②
        • Social capital in business
        • By converting these, I can further enhance ①②③ in the cycle
    • Social media
      • (Acknowledging its ephemeral nature compared to the above two)
      • Connection approach: Posting what was created in ①②③ on social media to gain impressions
      • Returns:
        • User feedback from those who used it → ②
        • Reach of users

Each connection point is seen as an “ecosystem with different value criteria”:

Writing down takeaways:

  • It is possible to distinguish between the “abilities necessary for the cycle” and the “abilities necessary to connect the cycle to society”:
    • The former is the goal itself, while the latter is merely a means
    • For example, the ability to “create interesting things” and “evaluate them through experiments” fall into the former.- However, the ability to distill it into papers that pass through that is the latter. In fact, one can interpret that this has been done throughout one’s life.

What is not fully captured by this model?

Other notes:

  • “Could behavior fall into a Local Optimum by optimizing for goals? In my case, due to my inherent hyperactivity trait, I think I might end up aimlessly doing weird things regardless. I believe I can naturally do things like Planned Serendipity and connecting the dots since I already have many successful experiences. For example, the Anno Takahiro Governor Election Development Festival. Therefore, I believe the likelihood of falling into a local solution is low. Being conscious of creating margin for this is important.

  • As I feel there may be no conclusion to questions like “what should be the purpose of life,” I will replace it with slightly more discussable terms like “internal motivation” and set a goal for scaling based on that, for now.

  • Why am I even writing this?

    • Having criteria that can be used for life decisions allows:
    • However, setting up a “rigid 30-year life plan” or “absolute life goal” is unrealistic in an uncertain world. Therefore, I attempted to create a model that allows for uncertainty yet serves as a guide for actions.

  • Makes some good points

It mentions setting “scaling up” as a goal based on “intrinsic motivation,” but there is a risk that expansion itself becomes the goal. The sustainability of long-term motivation remains questionable because it is unclear why one should expand and for what purpose one should cycle.

  • That’s true (blu3mo)
    • When asked if something that makes you happy now would make you ten times happier if scaled up tenfold, it’s quite dubious.

Taking that into account, specific action plans for the next few months
