  • Genealogically, it seems to be in the lineage of Informatics and Neocybernetics?

    • People discussing symbol emergence systems, etc.
    • This book explores the meaning of AI and robot society from various perspectives such as Symbol Emergence System Theory, Neocybernetics (Second-Order Cybernetics), and Pragmatism. One of the editors, tanichu, and one of the contributors, Takayuki Nagai, have been developing AI with a physical “body” (sensors, actuators, etc.) and a “brain” in the form of robots, while challenging the system dynamics of finding “meaning” through creating robots and discovering meaning through interactions with the environment and others. On the other hand, one of the editors and contributors like Yohei Nishida, Daisuke Harashima, and [[Sosuke Mukamoto have been advancing the systematic understanding of “meaning” in Neocybernetics. The planning of this book is based on the fundamental commonality and substantial similarity of contemporary system theories dealing with “meaning.” All of them are rooted in the constructivism of developmental psychologist Jean Piaget and the world-cybernetics theory of theoretical biologist Jakob von Uexküll, and they are also influenced by pragmatism, which has influenced the Symbol Emergence System Theory and can be considered the source of Neocybernetics (Nishigaki, 2010). Furthermore, as stated in Chapter 11 “Coexistence of Robots and Humans,” the Symbol Emergence System Theory itself has been theoretically constructed with reference to Neocybernetics.

Part 1: “Meaning” for AI, Robots, and Humans

  • Semantics

  • Difference between Neocybernetics and Semiotics of Emergence Systems

  • Part 1

    • Explaining various theoretical frameworks
  • Parts 2 and 3 deal with different layers

  • Part 2

    • Deals with the construction of internal and world-cybernetics and the understanding of internal meanings.
  • Part 3

    • Looking at the entire system with the assumption that “Believability” is good, without concerning whether there is an understanding of meaning internally.
    • (Not ignoring it but rather building on the discussions in Part 2.)
  • How do we coordinate our daily actions with others without peeking into their minds, accepting the premise that “we cannot peek into others’ minds”? We must explain how words (symbols) emerge, are shared, and enable communication in response to this problem.

    • How does this text fit into the asym-chat context? (blu3mo)
  • World-Cybernetics shares the same worldview.

  • This perspective leads to Piaget’s Emergent Epistemology and connects to Maturana and Varela’s Autopoiesis theory.

    • This seems to be the root of a social constructivist view of cognitive systems.
    • The process of growth constructs the world-cybernetics/cognitive mechanisms.

Feeling unwell, so I’ll read vaguely.

There is a qualitative difference between internal representations and symbols used for communication.

recognize = Re-recognition> For example, after seeing a certain fruit whose name we do not know, when shown the same type of fruit later, we are able to recognize that they are the same. Indeed, when it comes to recognition, the “re” part of the word becomes ambiguous.

In this way, within society, we create systems of symbols that we commonly use. We will refer to the system of symbols organized from the bottom up as an emergent symbol system. Here, the emergent symbol system represents the entire autonomous distributed system that generates symbolic interactions, and within it, the system of symbols that emerges from the micro-level where groups of agents exist to the macro-level is called the emergent symbol system.

  • Symbol Placement Problem
    • Ah, this was related to something like informatics, right?
    • In deep learning, a large amount of continuous values is not considered as “symbols” but as “internal representations.”

If we try to understand the function of meaning in our communication, it is necessary to understand the dynamics of symbol systems that emerge from the bottom up rather than starting from the top-down given “symbol” system and grounding it. - I see, that makes sense.

The emergence of symbol systems across multiple agents serves the function of connecting each agent’s “closed cognition” through the emergence of symbols. In other words, it can be said that symbol emergence performs the minimization of free energy as a group.
